NEXT GENERATION LEADER DEVELOPMENT

Nationwide, Virginia public schools rank 26th of 50 for state and local per pupil funding and 40th (38th in 2018)) of 50 for state funding. Virginia ranks 33rd (29th in 2018) of 50 for teacher salaries at over $8,000 below the national average, and at high-poverty county schools teachers were underpaid by $11,000, which has resulted in a shortage of teachers in Virginia schools; a 42% increase in the last 10 years. While the number of quality incoming teachers is steadily declining, the number of students in Virginia is growing. The percent of provisionally licensed and inexperienced teachers has climbed similarly. For the past nine years in Virginia, teacher turnover rates have been above ten percent due to lack of administrative support, poor teaching conditions, the pressures of accountability systems and low salaries compared to other similarly educated professions. The pandemic has caused additional financial distress for local school division, only partly offset by existing pandemic relief funds. This distress could have long-term implications for educational outcomes in Virginia. Despite Virginia schools in 2018 adding one counselor for every 250 students at a cost of $82.4 million, and one social worker as well as one psychologist per 1,000 students at a cost of $91.4 million to manage the mental health of students K-12, the negative metal health implications from COVID-19 are especially troublesome. Moreover, a 35% benchmark failure rate in history and social sciences or civics has a direct and negative impact on the leadership and civility of our youngest students and their potential for rise to greatness.

Solution
Education about civility, tolerance and respect for others, and being a selfless leader must start at the youngest age. The Next Generation Leader Development Program has three (3) initiatives that keep students Smart, Open-Minded, and Safe (SOS).

The SMART INITIATIVE consists of broadening students' historical knowledge of great leaders from the past they can emulate through various Enrichments. This initiative makes history come alive for several hundred students at a time during curriculum enrichment. In accordance with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL), and wearing historically accurate period attire in the first-person interpretation, students listen to leaders who made a difference in history, such as George Washington, Christopher Columbus, and Christopher Newport. Students are reminded they too can make a difference and the value of doing good things and giving of themselves for others, in order to be leaders at home, in school, and in their communities. The students are reminded they are potential leaders with their whole lives ahead of them to aspire to greatness and possibly be- one day- the President of the United States of America. The Smart initiative is available to all students K-5.

Scheduling: Contact EEYP at 540-604-3907 or dieter.stenger.eeyp@gmail.com to schedule Enrichments and/or check availability.

The OPEN-MINDED INITIATIVE broadens the minds of students after-school through mechanical, artistic, and emergency services explorations workshops. The Open-Minded initiative focuses on leadership skills beginning with self-pride and helping others, and available to all students K-5, but focuses on after-school students who are in supervised after-school programs while mom and dad are still working.

Mechanical Engineering Exploration offers students the chance to explore mechanical engineering landmarks, such as the famous WWII Jeep. The workshop sparks interest and discussion about an object that directly impacted people all over the world and our history in terms of industry and technology. Being able to see the simplicity of the engine under the hood, sit in the driver’s seat, hold the steering wheel and examine other components of the Jeep are all aspects of discussion that build trust and confidence to observe and talk about engineering landmarks. Their exposure and understanding of how the Jeep works will motivate and inspire students to believe in themselves that they too can develop engineering concepts. Hand-outs will visually help to understand how a 4-stroke engine works.

Art exploration workshops offers students the opportunity to artistically express themselves. Students are encouraged to connect with their thoughts and feelings and express these emotions with paint brushes, crayons, or colored pencils- or any medium they chose with no limitations. The purpose of the art exploration workshop is for students to develop self-confidence and self-satisfaction. School-councellors can participate or can be referred to address emotional barriers.

Emergency service exploration workshops offers students exposure to Virginia State Police and local county law enforcement officers to develop student self-confidence and trust. The students observe K9 demonstrations conducted by their state and county trained handlers.

Boot Camp. Another great after-school program that emphasizes leadership and teamwork.

Scheduling: Contact EEYP at 540-604-3907 or dieter.stenger.eeyp@gmail.com to schedule after-school workshops and/or check availability. For Memorial or Veteran's Day Observances please contact EEYP at 540-604-3907 or dieter.stenger.eeyp@gmail.com to check availability.

The SAFE INITIATIVE consists of Leader Development Workshops and a motivational speaking engagement about Courage, Leadership, and Honor: A Path to Greatness. Growing up is not easy and many students in elementary school may be struggling to cope with parents, siblings, peers, and school. The path to greatness program is designed to (1) encourage students to identify problems they may be experiencing and build the courage to (2) transform themselves into leaders and eventually (3) enjoy the honor associated with selflessness and service to others. The discussion is intended to prepare students in 5th Grade for middle school and life: to help students understand themselves, find out what makes them happy, and then make the best choices as they continue to grow and evolve into upstanding, law-abiding citizens, and young leaders characterized by integrity, respect, and good will. The Safe initiative is available to all students K-5.

Scheduling: Contact EEYP 540-604-3907 or dieter.stenger.eeyp@gmail.com to schedule motivational speaking engagement and/or check availability.
